Til Death [do us meet]

I had wanted to climb
to the rooftop
and shout out
my love
for you

but life stood in
the way and
at the toss of a dice
our paths bifurcated

such was our fate
and life goes on
“for life is for the living,”
you once said

my heart still beats
my lungs help me breathe
but my soul is dead

it has flown away
to find its home
nestled within you

each rosary bead
becomes ever more
polished by the tender
rub of my fingers
as they bring me
closer to you

my mouth mimics
prayers knowing
that they won’t bring
you back to life

we’ve never made
any vows but know
somehow that
til death do us meet.
