The Scary Room

Forward:

Welcome to BantaaKids, the section dedicated to the creative work of the youngest writers among us.

This series will predominantly feature short stories written by ESL (English as a Second Language) students from J.S.Worth’s creative writing classes back in the real world, where he works as an English teacher in China.

These classes begin with a writing prompt (featured below) to which the students plan, draft, and then produce a final copy all in the space of 2 hours.

We hope you enjoy reading their fantastic work and can appreciate the level of dedication these young writers have put into their studies, especially given how challenging it is to learn a second language.

Thanks

– J.S.Worth

Prompt: The more dangerous a job is, the more money it pays. Your main character has just been offered $100K to stand in an empty room for one hour.

The Scary Room

by Niklas

I was a new person in the city of ‘Money’ and I just joined the company ‘Standing is Fun’ yesterday. They offered me $100K / hour to be in a room. I was amazed that standing could make me money! My first try was today.

I jogged into the room with nothing but an enormous closet. I tried the door to open it but it was locked. As my assistant closed the door, I sat by the wooden striped-door to wait the time pass by. Just as 20 minutes went by, the room began to shake. I was being pushed into the walls, and the room began to tremble as well.

I banged into the wall hard, and then right into the ceiling. How would this kind of disaster happen? Was there anybody who wanted to frame me? Who would be doing jobs in a haunted house! I grabbed the ceiling tightly but without even a grip. Then, the closer made a howling and roaring sound.

After that, a spectacular water fountain rushed near the door. The water began to ascend. Just as it went over my feet, I looked around for a window, but there wasn’t any. I jumped when I banged on the wall.

Fortunately, the ‘bang’ was harmless, but my heart hammered. This time my feet were full of water, and the water made my feet pale. Suddenly, swords and spears started to jab out of the closet. My hands were filled with blood. In this case, I would rather die but spiders were coming out. “Arrrach!” I shouted as they used their itchy and sharp jaws!

But suddenly, everything was gone, and the door opened. The hour was over!

As my assistant took me back to the center, he told me about ‘Money’. It was controlled by Japan 100 years ago and five houses were like that. Also, the more expensive the salary, the more danger!

I was shocked! I would never do this again.
