Today I Know Nothing

Today I don’t know anything,
not even how to talk.
I cannot bring myself to eat
or even lift a fork.

I gaze beyond the window sill,
to where the children play.
I wish their innocence returned
to me, before dismay.

Life has been a learned trek,
it’s taught me everything.
And yet I feel I’ve wasted much
on birds who will not sing.

Then again, I’m energised
by memories of past.
The better ones, in which we still
had future dreams to cast.

The day may come when you decide
you made a foolish bet.
And on that day, I do not know
if I’ll be ready yet.
